Diplomatic formalities resulting from an invitation to perform at the White House caused Granados to miss his scheluled departure from Europe, and this delay caused him to miss this concert. The steamer on which he eventually sailed, the S.S. Sussex, was torpedoed in the English Channel by a German submarine on March 24, 1916, and both Granados and his wife drowned as a result.
