The elder Damrosch founded both the Oratorio Society of New York and the New York Symphony Orchestra in the 1870s. Walter took over leadership of both organizations upon his father's death in 1885, and two years later convinced Andrew Carnegie to fund the construction of a home for the Oratorio Society. The Music Hall founded by Andrew Carnegie opened on May 5, 1891.
